Nutrition Tip of the Week:

Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fats with only 5gm per serving. During the holiday season coming up, substitute avocado for up to half of the fat called for in your recipe (butter, oil). Not only will it create a rich, creamy texture, it's great for your skin too! Try this recipe for California Avocado Chocolate Mousse that I tried at the ADA Food & Nutrition Conference in San Diego this past September. Delicious!

Qualifications of a Registered Dietitian

A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements including:

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree with course work approved by ADA’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. Coursework typically includes food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry.
  • Completed an accredited, supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation.
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Completes continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.

Registered dietitians who are members of the American Dietetic Association are not only food and nutrition experts — they are leaders in the field of dietetics. Every one of ADA's wide array of member benefits is designed to advance their knowledge and skills and enhance their networking opportunities.

Believe it or not "The Active Eater" name was brainstormed among my running friends a few years ago when I used to talk about being on the food network and dreamed of what I would call my show! With my background in Exercise Science and love for running and fitness, I wanted my nutrition outlook to coincide with my persistent belief that we must be active and eat well to be fully healthy. Just as we all must eat, so must we all be active. The Active Eater blog is an avenue to talk about all the different types of active eaters out there, from Pregnant eaters to Desk Job eaters to Kids and Teen Eaters, we all have different nutrition needs and I hope to bring to light all the ways we can live a full life, use food as fuel and be ACTIVE!

Pilates was my first passion after graduating from Central College in exercise science Health Promotion. I am now so proud to be a registered dietitian and share the nutrition knowledge that the world needs to improve their health! Now we have both sides of the equation, energy in (food - yum!) and energy out (pilates and cardio exercise too!) with the duty to help people find this balance in their own lives. I am particularly passionate about child nutrition knowing that we must break the trend of inactivity and undernourishment. Additionally, I love to cook and brainstorm recipes to try out on my husband and family. Food has a powerful effect as we use it to run our bodies each day and I love to talk about it and how it can make your body run and feel better and of course taste great too!
